How do you transfer over AIM if you have a router/firewall?
I've been having this problem on both of my networks. I can't transfer my files over to friends using AIM when I have a router. Anyone know of any solutions?
I have the SMC Wireless 4-port router back at home, and the Netgear RT314 router in my apartment. I'm having problems with sending stuff using both. |

I've figured it out for my SMC router.. *smacks self for not reading previous posts first*.. I set my port on AIM to 3512, and my router to open 3512.. and now it works. Is Netgear the same way? I think I tried it last time, it didn't work.. will have to try during the weekend when i get back home

Should be similar with any router, as long as you open the port that you have aim or any program for that matter, to open the right port.

How do you set the port that AIM uses? ... or even find out which one it is using?

Are you referring to what AIM uses to connect to its servers, or what port to set to transfer files over the network? Aim by default uses port 5190 to connect to login.aol.com. This can be found by clicking: My AIM> My Options> Edit Preferences> Sign On/Off> Connections. the port is listed right there. I'm not sure what changing the ports will do though =P As for setting up the port for transferring, you click My AIM> My Options> Edit Preferences> File Transfer> Port number to use. You then set whichever port you want, except 21, 80, etc. which are used by http and other services. After you set a port up, log in to your router/firewall, if possible, and find where you can map the ports. Set the ports to the same you entered into AIM, and the IP address of your computer. That should do it I believe. |

ICQ In ICQ under "Preferences & security", "Preferences" and Connections, click on "I am behind a firewall or proxy" then click on "Firewall Settings". Then select "I don't have a SOCKS Proxy server on my firewall" or "I am using another Proxy server". Click Next. Click "Use the following TCP listen ports for incoming event" and set the TCP ports for 20000 to 20019 for the first user, 20020 to 20039 for the second user, 20040 to 20059 for the third user, etc. OUT UDP 4000 IN TCP 20000 20019 for one user OR IN TCP 20000 20039 for two users OR IN TCP 20000 20059 for three users, etc. |

How About For Messenger??
To continue the trend..... how do you get messenger open to view each other over a webcam. My friend has an SMC router (and I have the same) with another computer hooked up as well, but neither one of us can connect to each other's webcam. SMC states their router does not work well with MS Messenger (no NAT). Any ideas? besides using another IM proggy.
