Burning CD's

I had a quick question. I want to take my normal CD's and make my own MP3 CD's to use in my MP3 player in my car so I don't have to carry all my CD's. I have Nero as my burner program. Can Nero convert to MP3's?? And if it can how do I do it??? Or do I need to download some other program to convert to MP3's??? ANd if so what are some good free programs I can download and where???

thanks Cyric

well, you have to have a codec that nero will need to convert audio files to mp3s within nero. go to their site and they have it there (i know they have one, but im not sure if its free or not).

that being said, nero is NOT the best way to make mp3s. You have 3 considerations:

1)QUALITY - When you compress the audio files to an mp3 file, you lose a lot of high frequencies (usually the ones the human ear cant pick up). On the average, when you listen at normal volumes in a car, you dont really hear the highs cuz of road noise. But if you have a badass system, why compromise? SO you need a good encoder.

2)ENCODER - hands down its LAME version3.91. Ive tried a lot of encoders (blade, fraunhofer, xing's encoder), but none came close to the quality that lame makes for you. Go to www.r3mix.net for a better in-depth info on this, but trust me, you need to encode using Lame3.91. To run lame you need a good front-end. There's EAC, which rips the audio tracks from the CD PERFECTLY, so when you encode the audio files with LAME 3.91, your audio quality is (almost) preserved.
By the way, both Lame3.91 and EAC are free.

3)SIZE - this is pretty much a debateable area. You want the best sounding mp3s, but they will be bigger than your normal mp3s. If you want MORE mp3s per CD, the files will have to be smaller, and that creates less quality for the songs. But then again, media is so cheap nowadays, i dont concern myself with file sizes...

so its up to you if you want more songs per CD, ot better quality when you turn up teh volume (trust me its horrible when the bitrate is lower and you max the volume on your car...)

Thats the complicated way of saying use LAME and rip to 192kbs.

LOL
Dont knock something until you try it.
Lots of people have a blinkered view until they actually try out the software, then they wonder why they never tried it before...
Heres a totally unbiased review...

Thumbs up

Personally I use dbPowerAMP for ripping anything to MP3 and it includes the LAME encoder from within the program. It's pretty easy to use, through CDs it has it's own reader/ripper and you can even right click from within Windows and convert files with it right then and there. I highly recommend it plus it's freeware so you can't beat that (no spyware, ads, time restrictions etc.). The only thing it won't let you do, freeware wise is edit ID3 Tags and there's much better programs for that sort of thing anyhow.
