Windows 2000 Problem..Need Help Please

Everytime I try to plug in a certain "USB Mass Storage" device (digital camera), my computer lags badly (sometimes memory dumps).
I use Win2000...
Now, here is my question. Microsoft knows about this issue.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q291284
However, I cant get my hands on the fix. How do I go about this?
If I cant get the fix, would a new usbhub.sys solve the problem for me?

I have tried everything under the stars and I am just pissed off that Microsoft cant just get their fix out to regular people like me..

Thanks a bunch

I've had a very similiar problem with Win2000 and mass storage. In my case the culprit was, of all things, Easy CD Creator. Evidently the folks at Sandisk figured this out. Easy CD Creator bastardizes an important file for USB storage devices. The solution was to update the program (EZCD) to the latest version posted on their web site. As you can imagine, learning all this made for an interesting Sat. morning.

I hope it helps.

Easy CD Creator is evil. Their software just seems to mess with too many important Window's files. Just my two bits from troubleshooting the problems it's created on so many of my friend's and client' computers.

Yeap if you uninstall EZCD Creator 5 from Win2K, the CD-ROM drivers will be gone thus you have no CD! It happened to me before and luckily I have it in my hard drive so I reinstalled!

I had the same thing happen, although i installed it from a CD. Rixio response to the missing CD-ROMs, "Reinstall Easy CD Creator." Great... Thanks for the help!

Luckily, i was running a netowrk in my apartment so i used the CD-ROM from a non-'Easy CD Creator'-trashed computer and copied the entire CD over the network. Reinstalling Easy CD Creator worked, but in the end i ended up doing a complete reinstallation of the computer to remove any trace of Rixio's trashware from my computer. Then i gave the CD to my worst enemy!

Let's also not forget the original situation with Easy CD Creator 4-5 that lead to computer experts being quoted in news article's saying that the software caused the worst crashes they ever seen on a Windows system since Windows 3.11! They reported having crashed computer that could only be repaired to working condition by reinstalling everything.

I remember browsing news articles at work and reading the Adaptec/Roxio mess aloud to my co-workers, but unfortunately i wasn't able to find the exact same article.

I did however find a bunch of other articles, just not the same one:

. http://www.mfinley.com/articles/worlds-collide.htm
. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/19099.html

If you want to try searching for the original article, these are a few of the things i remember from it:

. The article was posted before Roxio released a patch to fix it
. They mentioned that Adaptec split the software off to Roxio
. They mentioned that the software probably was released before it was ready
. They mentioned that it crashed Windows 2000 machines
. They mentioned that a lot of computers had to be completed reinstalled to recover the system.
. They quoted professionals stating that it caused the worst computers crashes they've seen since Windows 3.1 (or was it 3.11?)

Good luck. It seems like Roxio did some handy-work to remove this article from the web. I did a search for the keywords i remember, but didn't come up with the exact article.

Angry

I hate EasyCD. :mad4:

(back in the day)
<boot up computer>
*power on*
pass bios test
-blank-
BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH
"SCS1HLP.DLL ERROR"
=scream out loud=
f-disk, format c:reboot off Win98 SE disc, reinstall EVERYTHING.

Ever since then...I don't use it. Anymore. Ever. In fact, I've used the CD of it in more flingin'-across-the-room ways than one. I hate Roxio. Even GoBack is a piece of crap. THAT screwed up my Win2k system (pc#1) about three weeks ago. I had to reformat my HD and clean install Win2k because of GoBack.

Roxio
