Wierd-"It is now safe to shut off your computer"
Remember how Windows 95 use to post this message after it had finished its' shutdown procedure? Well I have a friend who recently upgraded his Windows 98 machine to Windows XP, and now when XP shuts down he gets this message. Isn't that strange? For some reason it is reverting to the old crappy Windows 95 shutdown message, even though it never had Windows 95 installed on it.
Can you guys/gals think of what he can do to get past this problem? The computer he is using is a Sony Vaio desktop. Thanks!

Did it shut down without the screen with Windows 98?
Check the power settings in the BIOS. They need to allow the OS to shut off the system. |

Hi James thanks for your reply. When Windows 98 was installed, the computer shut down on it's own without prompting the user. My understanding is that it started happening immediately after installation of XP.
I doubt this guy is capable of changing his BIOS settings and I for damn sho ain't gonna do it either(he lives in Ohio). So it sounds like he might be up a creek. Oh well. Thanks for your input! |

Well, if he wants an excuse, blame it on the upgrade. I always to a clean install when changing operating systems, just to be sure that i'm starting with a clean system.

Has he checked the APM (Power Options) settings in the Control Panel? There might be something there that would help.
When all else fails, I have had great luck with this method. However it involves editing the registry which, if you don't trust this guy to touch his BIOS, might not be the best thing to have him do. ![]()
