Sound and Vision did an interesting article comparing the three codecs for "CD-quality" audio. Interesting read:

what about aac, since mp3 is supposed to be replaced by aac

any windows audio stuff is going to be all copy protected and thats bad. i will stick with my 6 gigs of mp3's for the time being

it'd be great for smaller file sizes.. but it would also be great if they had some way of making all my current mp3 files smaller without loss of quality.

aac is a higher quality sound, with a smaller file size. you can reduce your library size substantially by using aac and retain the sound qquality

well for me it is MP3 for now, I encode using LAME, and the DJ soft I uses only supports MP3, so I have to use MP3 untill they change that..

and for file size, well I will just buy larger drives as needed

I aggree the test was less than excellent. FYI: The way they did the test was converting a CD track to a PCM, then compressing the PCM into different formats and doing a double-blind test of the PCM to the compressed audio, and deciding which one sounded best and by how much the lesser is off.

BTW: I'm still using MP3, because more in-dash MP3 CDplayers play just mp3, and not mp3 and wma...but more are being produced that do every day.

yeah, thats a good sign - it actually is more efficient. It makes use of less space for more silent parts of the song. in the more silent parts the bitrate goes down, and on the "busier" parts of the song, the bitrate jumps up. Depending on the Max and Min bitrate set by the person who encoded it, the mp3 file will show different bitrates at different parts.
