Way to make windows display the size of a folder?

I've used these OSs for nearly a decade now, and one thing I have often wondered: When I set the display to "details" why isn't the size of the folder displayed. Surely that is more valueable information than "File Folder".

The reason is speed. The size of the folder is calculated on the fly, including all free space and all wasted space. I have a couple of folders where when I choose properties to see how big they are, it takes a good 10 seconds to calculate! If Windows had to do that for every folder, Explorer would be sloooooooooooooower than it already is.

Especially if you connect to shares over a network... at work, we keep all user folders in a single share (for people's home directories). Imagine the wait to calculate the folder size for 200GB worth of files over a network... ouch!
