XP Home and XP Pro sharing. . .

Here is the setup. Main box is running XP Home and a latop running XP Pro. They're connected together over a router. When I try to share a folder on the main box running home, it works, but when I want to share a "my documents" folder on the home box I can't access it from the laptop. Is there a way to enable this somehow? Freaking home sucks. . . so much less control or at least it appears to be.

Bah found this in one of the info files

The Sharing option is not available for the Documents and Settings, Program Files, and WINDOWS system folders. In addition, you cannot share folders in other user's profiles

POS bastards limiting xp home this much. . . wtf. Oh well at least I can setup a briefcase on the laptop and update from the main box. . . but still would be nice to do an update from either end pos. . . so pissed off. *especially when both copies of xp being used ARE legal . . .

NTFS all around, but thats not the prob. MS decided to not allow the sharing of any file or folder in the "documents and settings" directory.

Nope none of what you mentioned df. Just look at the quote I found in a help file in the main box which is running xp home. I think there is no way to get around it really. It says I can't share any files or folders that are in the "documents and settings" folder. I am able to share stuff from that directory on a xp pro, but home looks like its limited to not share it unless if there is some hack and I don't know about it.

I don't remember correctly cause I'm not back home, but I do have a setup at home running with two XP Pro and two XP Home boxes. If I remember correctly, the trick is to set the Pro boxes to utilize simple sharing that is run on Home which doesn't allow varied-level user sharing.

Ah that could be it. . . but my dad's laptop can't be used in simple share since he uses it to get on the network at the hospital. . . oh well. He can update his briefcase of docs from the main box some reason but not off the laptop. . . so its semi working I guess.

I cant seem to figure out why I can share anything under that directory with my "Home" machine but yet you cant. By the way I am not using simple sharing on my Pro box and it still works.

I just went in on the Pro box, changed the permissions to share my C:\Documents and Settings folder to share, and then when I went to my Home laptop and clicked on "My Network Places", "Entire Network", "Microsoft Windows Network", and all the sub folders down to my Main computer the C:\Documents and Settings folder came right up...

Honestly, I think something is wrong with your setup... 'cause this works for me.

Yeah but I think you're misunderstanding my setup. The main box is running XP HOME and the laptop I'm trying to connect to the main box is running XP PRO. The XP HOME box can access the documents and settings directory however it doesn't work vice versa. . . and as I quoted from the XP HOME help file it looks as though I can't share that directory. . . . You're setup is AS much as the opposite as what I am trying to do I think DF hehe. Thanks though.

Yeah I know its some problem reason why its posted here . Anyhow again thanks for the suggestions but like I quoted from this thing before:

Quote:

I dunno how you got yours to work but you're just a luck sob I guess . And probably I'm just cursed I guess. I guess I could solve all these problems if I just had XP Pro all around since I know how to share anything with that. . . /me cursing at MS some more. Oh well c'est la vie.

BTW your first explanation was saying you could access the documents on the pro box from the home box. I can do that its the other way around that its not working. XP Home documents can't be accessed from the XP Pro, so it is the opposite of what you were saying. Nothing to do with the hardware as you stated and I wasn't talking about that. Anyhow again thanks for your suggestions but I wasn't meaning to be rude to you if you were infering to that with this:

You got some other kind of problem dude... trust me.

Anyhow whatever maybe it is another problem I'm overlooking but doubt it since I found that message in the help file. I guess I could fix the whole bs crap by moving the documents directory somewhere else but that would be just more work since the home box has multiple accounts for the whole family. Oh well like I said before my dad is able to update the docs to a briefcase from the home box so thats good enough. Just would be nice to update from the laptop but its ok, it sort of works.
