Accepting credit cards?

Hello,
Friend wants me to build him a site which would allow people to pay using a credit card. I don't know too much on the subject and was curious if anyone could shed some light on the subject? I am planning on using readyhosting.com for the site and they support something called cart32.com? It looks interesting, but I might just go with Paypal. Trying to minimize cost for him since it is a new business and I would like to see him do well. Thanks.

Stay away from paypal.

Its not too reliable nor is it professional. If it were my business I would go with brinkster as the host and there is some .net credit card processor. I didn't read the details but I think it was like $250 which now that I think about it seems too cheap. I am going to find it again, but stay away from paypal. It is not a real bank and its not FDIC insured. And if his account gets hacked, he is screwed.

Thanks for the tip off on Paypal! I checked the site out again and agree that they look a little shady. Checked out CCNow as well but they charge a big percentage on each transaction. Since my friend will be selling big ticket items, a 9-11% fee is too much. I then went to CNET.com to see what was recomended. They had Dellhost and then a company called hostway.com which seems to be good. Here is a link to the plans they offer:

https://www.hostway.com/ecommerce/compar.htm

You get webspace and I think an Internet merchant account for a monthly fee. I am a little confused by the merchant account in that in some cases it seems as though it is included in the package price, then in other cases it is a seperate fee. Too late for tonight, but I will look into it more tomorrow.

Oh, by the way, has anyone worked with Miva Merchant or Cart32? Which do you recommend? Thanks.
