stolen CPU cycles
Why is it that after a certain time, theres always a process on my comp that taking up 70-90% of the cpu power?
the process is called svchost.exe and its created by LOCAL SERVICE. anyways, its just really annoying that its always running and hogging my CPU |

Well I know that Windows update uses that file to check for, oddly enough, Windows updates
My understanding though is that svchost is a generic process that many apps use. Are you all patched up with Windows XP service pack 1 and the security updates? Are you on cable by and chance? I would first make sure you are patched before you try and dig any further. Oh yeah one more thing, do you have any kind of firewall application?

yea, i'm all patched up, withe sp1 and everything. I usu. update windows whenever it wants to. I'm on a DSL ISP, but i think we're on a switch, rather than a router (its one of those small Linksys Workgroup switches). I don't have any software-based firewall running, but I do have VirusScan going all out.
Usually, if its taking away too much cpu power, i just end the process. besides, theres usu. more than one svchost running for some reason. |
