if you are using an NT system, you can install remote desktop (it might be installed in xp) and allow incoming connections via the web. if you are using 98, install pcanywhere or similar software.

i dont know of any other way to restart a computer via the internet

You gotta load SOMETHING on it. VinVNC, PC Anywhere, remote desktop - there's even some tools in the W2K resource kit that would allow it.

But yes, you will need to install *something* before you can reboot "your" pc over the web.

I think your only other option is if you have a telnet or ssh daemon running. There's various commands to shutdown the computer, like Jeff said, one comes with the W2K resource kit, but i'm sure there's more around. A quick google search takes me to:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Oper..._10183579.html
Which is just a discussion about it with links.

Anyway, then you just need to telnet/ssh into your computer and run shutdown.exe, give it some options, and you'll reboot.

Reading over the messages, this all only applies if by "remote" you meant the computer that you're connecting from. If by "remote" you mean the computer that you're connecting to, then Jeff's right, you need to install something

I believe there is an activeX applet or something that you can program to do this for you.. I know nothing about programming or anything, but I could have sworn I read it somewhere..

I know what you are looking for, its RealVNC. its a service on the Host computer (the one you want to reboot), and you can run it through a web browser (Just connect to port 5800) from the remote machine.

Actually, I think there MIGHT be a way.

Go to www.sysinternals.com

Download PStools under utilities.
Install an NT based system on the remote computer.
Make a direct connection somehow and keep it open. (AIM, for example)
I forget how, but there's a way to get an IP for anything connected to you. Maybe it's net stat, I can't remember.
Inside the PStools package, there's a command prompt tool you can use to reboot a remote PC. (It can also kill remote processes...fun for pranks at work, fellow admins.)

I think VNC is def, the way to go. Gives you the web browser function you're looking for as well as FREE!

This seems to be the easiest for me...
I use remote desktop here at work to connect to my computer at home...
I just run "msconfig" and then close out of it...
It asks you to restart the computer...
Very simple...
