.avi files and windows media player

I was wondering if anyone else had problems with playing .avi files in their Media Player software?

I am having a few problems and this is sort of random. It does not happen with all .avi files just a few. I've tried playing it in the Divx player, and that doesn't work either. I've also check the Microsoft knowledge base and the only thing I could find was it won't play if the file is too large (like 2GB)...and these are only around 100-500MB.

Specs:
Windows Media Player 9
Downloaded the codecs from Microsoft
Have Divx, hbo and angel codecs installed
Athlon XP 1600+
512MB DDR
GF4 ti4200 @ default speeds

TIA

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the Angelpotion codecs keep some other .avi files from playing correctly. Perhaps you could try uninstalling those and see what happens?

i use nemo's codec pack which opens almost every video i try to open. dont know how it works with wmp9 though.

if nemos pack doenst work, you can always check what the codec used is and try to find it online. sometimes wmp wont display the codec in the file properties so i use quicktime to check it out. usually one of the two will show it.

I've found that the older WMP works better with AVI files. Start > Run > mplayer2

Is there a new DIVX codec somewhere, or a new codec that people are ripping with?? I've gotten some movie .avi's lately that either don't play at all, or I get picture w/no sound or sound w/no picture. I've tried them both with Windows Media Player and with the Global Divx Player, but same results in either one.

Maybe I'm just getting bad files?

Perhaps they are encoded with XviD?
