installing an OS on a laptop

my friend gave me his laptop to reinstall his OS, and when i turn it on i get the XP bsod with or without the XP cd in the drive, how do i start the computer from the cd?

you gotta get into the BIOS, if you can figure out how, they're all different depending on company and model. Then you need to change the boot order so that the system tries to boot from the CD before the HDD.
