remote desktop

I have a win 2k box with all my mp3s on it and it is hooked up to my stereo via a digital out on the m-audio revolution thats in it but for some reason I cannot play any sounds. I have checked to make sure that I am leaving sounds etc at the remote computer and it plays fine when I am logged in to the box itself. Any ideas? The error message says that no audio hardware it available.

Wait so you are trying to play the mp3's on your remote computer on your local computer and you are having problems? Or are you trying to do something else? I am a bit confused by your question. What exactly do you mean by "I am leaving sounds at the remote computer". Clarify a little and I'm sure we can help you get going.

I am using the remote desktop program on my laptop which is XP. I have win2k on a server that is hooked up to my stereo.

So to play music I launch remote desktop on my laptop and terminal into the server. There is an option on remote desktop that tells the remote computer (the 2k box) to leave the sound there. In theory, it should process the sound and pump it out the sound card and then out to the stereo.

I guess you could say that I am using the latop and a remote, b/c all I am doing with it is selecting the songs to play on the 2k box and that box should do it all locally.

Ok, forget about using Terminal Services. When you play the sound in a Terminal session, it will try to play it on the machine that is running the terminal client (your XP laptop).

Use this instead, it's free and will do what you want. For best results, lower the number of colors you are displaying on your server...

Thanks, I will give this a try but I have selected to leave the sound at the remote computer in terminal services.

The weird part is that if I log onto the server locally it works. It also works remotely if I have logged in physically first. The problem is that I do not want a monitor or keyboard/mouse hooked up to the server so I get screwed after a reboot.

Ok, this will fix your logging in problem:

WARNING: This procedure will allow the user to log on automatically to the domain. This could cause a serious security problem. Anyone booting this system with this registry modification will be logged on to the system with the user's security credentials.
Start Regedt32.exe and locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Establish your domain name, account name, and password, using the values you would normally type when logging on. You should assign the following values: DefaultDomainName, DefaultUserName, and DefaultPassword.

NOTE: The DefaultDomainName and DefaultUserName values may already exist. The DefaultPassword value may not. If it does not, create it. To do so:
On the Edit menu, click Add Value.
In the Value Name box, type DefaultPassword.
In the Data Type box, click REG_SZ.
Click OK.
In the String Editor box, type your password. Click OK and save your changes.

NOTE: If no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows automatically changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon key from 1 (true) to 0 (false). This disables the AutoAdminLogon feature. This behavior also occurs if the DefaultPassword string is specified but the password is left blank or null.
On the Edit menu, click Add Value. Type AutoAdminLogon in the Value Name box. Click REG_SZ in the Data Type box. Enter 1 in the String box. Save your changes.
Quit Regedt32.exe.
Shut down Windows and turn off the computer.
Restart your computer and Windows 2000. You should be able to log on automatically now.

Stupid little thing but in the options of remote desktop there's one for sound. Make sure you got it set so that it plays sound on the main machine not the one accessing it.

I did have the option checked in remote desktop but it still did not work.

Snot, I tried the auto logon and still had issues but the I tried realvnc and it works great. It is a little slower than remote desktop but it is functional and thats what I was looking for.

Thanks,

-C

No prob. Like I said, for performance, reduce desktop colors on the server to <256 and drop the resolution if possible. Basically, the simpler the interface, the faster it will be.

If you have any heavy wallpaper, scratch that too.
