Adding W2k Server to NT4 domain

Sup guys...

Not too NT4 savy....

If I want to add a w2k3 server to a NT4 environment.....what do I have to do?

It just going to be a file server, that's it. Nothing fancy....

What i need to do? Just add it as a member server on the DC?

Let me know if I am talking out of my butt......

Yup. You can just join the Domain as usual, putting in your NT4 ADmin credentials when prompted for it.

You may have to manually turn on WINS on the W2K3 server, since DNS is the native name resolution service for W2k and higher. If you get no issues without it, then don't worry about it!

Thanks.....

But how about adding a nt4.0 file server? same thing?

Where do you add it as a member server? Is it in the admin tools?

Well that's different. Adding an NT4 server to a Win2k+ Domain depends on how you setup your Domain. If you have your Domain setup on Native mode, you won't be able to add it. This is a feature that you have to deliberately do from the command line though, so if you don't remember doing it, you prolly didn't.

Anyhow, to add an NT4 server to a domain, right click on Network Neighborhood and choose properties. On the first tab "Identification" it will list your machine name and current Domain. Click the button that says Change.

You should start out in a workgroup, in which case you just choose Domain, type in the name of the Domain. Check the box that says "Create Computer Account..." Below that, type in your userid in the form of domain\userid followed by the password below. You should be all set. Make sure you have WINS and DNS entries configured on the server before trying to join the Domain or you will get errors like "cannot find Domain Controller for the xxx Domain".
