Does it have to be IE? It would be much easier to put a power on password in your bios so that they can't even boot up the computer without the password...
Also, if you have a router, most allow you to block internet access between certain times...

Ok how do you put on a "power on password in your bios so that they can't even boot up the computer without the password...", this sounds like a better plan. ?? Router?? I have cable dial up from our local cable company, not sure about a router??

There are a bunch of different options you have - you can password protect the BIOS as Snot recommended - this will lock them out of the PC entirely.
You can turn on parental controls on IE - this will block most objectionable sites, but a lot of useful sites as well. If you don't know, then you probably don't have a router. There are also various 3rd party tools available to secure your PC so the kids can use it, but not get to places they shouldn't be - such as NetNanny, Internetwatch, guardprivacy, etc. To enable the BIOS password - when you turn on your machine, there's usually a few tests it runs through before Windows begins to boot. As it's doing the tests, it may display a little message like 'Press F2 to enter setup'... could be F2, Del, Ctrl-alt-ins, etc. This will bring you into the BIOS setup of the PC. In here, you'll probably have to navigate around using the arrow & tab keys, but somewhere in here there will be an option of setting a power-on password. Set that up, and without the password you won't even be able to boot the computer. There are ways around it, of course (generally you can reset it by moving a jumper on the motherboard); but you'll at least know if the password was reset or changed. |

What type of computer do you have? Dell, Compaq, Gateway? This will help us figure out what you need to do to enter teh bios.

this is oddly similar to something I want to do. I want to keep people off the actual internet, but be able to access our local intranet. right now, they are inputing the default gateway and thus gaining unadultered access to the internet, instead of doing their jobs. Since it's a sem-assembly line, this make my life much more diffucult, because they would rather screw around online, than do their work.
![]() So i wanted to implement something that they couldn't get around.. i still haven't figured anything out (short of uninstalling tcp/ip) ![]() |
