Extracting parts of an already encoded piece of music is a little difficult to accomplish. The big boys that to remixes have the luxury of working with each individual track. However you might have some luck with Acid Pro or Soundforge. But it is going to take some time to play around with settings.

there is no program that will break out the vocals and the instruments. you can play around with eq and other settings, but it's very difficult. you're better off buying the song on vinyl and recording to your computer, since vinyl usually has a capella and instrumental versions of songs.

I've used mixmeister to mix songs together but I heard ppl using soundforge as a better alternative. Still no way to extract out just the vocals or just the music.

There are ways to separate vocal and instrumental tracks with a software package - namely ProTools, which allows for the use of numerous plugins. The home version costs about $500 and the professional version costs about $15,000. This is the software that many albums are recorded/mixed with today, which allows those no-name bands a chance at becoming stars.

Soundforge is another alternative and is probably the best tool for entry-level music editing.
