(they needed a tech support guy on call) I usually just connect to my work pc from others just going to C$ do I need to enable any specific settings on the mac or the pc to be able to access my shared stuff?

if you're going from mac to pc, anywhere in the finder hit command(applekey)+k this will bring up the connect to server thing. Or you can go up to the finder bar click on go->connect to server. If you're running on the latest os x (10.2.5) its pretty decent on connecting to windows tcp machines. However it is still somewhat limited. If you want more features such as accessing shared printers on the windows machines, check out this nice program called Dave from thursby software. http://www.thursby.com/default.html excellent piece of code. I have yet to run accross any trouble connecting to a windows machine with this program.

I can print to my Canon inkjet printer from Mac OS X v10.2.x just fine, and it's shared on my Windows XP box. No Dave required, I use the free version of TurboPrint for the S9000 drivers, although many printers are supported with CUPS alone.
