SQL Databases: Can you back up?

So I just placed an order for my new domain name: mymomsaysimcool.com and will start working on the site soon. I will probably have a message board on there and was wondering a few things. Is there a way to back up the SQL data stored on the server onto a regular windows xp machine incase the host ever goes out of business? I'd hate to lose the entire board.

Yes, you can easily do this. Depending on the message board software used, it's usually within the admin tools that allow you to make a backup for offline purposes.

I'm not sure. I have not ordered any webhosting yet. Probably MySQL? I'm not too savvy with the SQL I can only set up the DBs through web interfaces and such.

Slaw: Know do you know any message boards that have that option?

P.S. Anyone know any cheap webhsots with PHP and MySQL?

vBulletin, phpBB (free) and ikonboard (free) all feature database backups. I believe that this is a necessary feature of any mainstream message board, so they should all have it.

I'll put my opinion in here. Solid Internet has been fast and reliable for me, and it's pretty cheap too. Starting at ~$30/yr for the starter package - it's not too shabby. I'd recommend going with (at least) the standard package (~$60/yr or $5/mo) for your needs.

Powweb Has been very good to me at $7.77 per month. If you pay a year in advance, they wave the setup fee and you get a month free.

Yes, ask if your host has cpanel. It will allow you do download your databases. I do this periodically, plus my host backs up my dbs every night.

phpbb is a good free one.
