Re-sizing my hard drive

hello, i just upgraded my os from 98 to xp. i forgot xp is much larger than 98 and i only assigned 1.5gb to my c drive so now it is full !! and i couldn't get my partition magic 5.0 to work xp neither. do anyone know any shareware or trial/demo version that allows re-sizing ?? i don't really want to spend 50-80 bucks to get PM8.0 cuz i seldom use it. thanks !!

well it took me a long time to install xp and all the softwares back.... so i don't really want to do that again.
yes you are right, my hard drive is small (it was BIG 4 years ago!! ) only 12gb. i blew a chance to get a 80gb hdd w/8mb cache for only $30 at officedepot.com the other time.

There will be other deals...lots of HD deals have been popping up lately. Visit the deals forum often.

I'm agree with DF-treat yourself to a bigger and FASTER hard drive.

do you have a CD burner and Norton Ghost? i say, ghost the current XP install to a couple of CDRs, and then nuke the drive. Change the partition sizes to how you like them, and then ghost the XP from the CDRs to the new partition. I forget, but i think the XP install (even if it came from a 1.5GB partition), will install on the new/bigger partition with the bigger partition's size.

kinda like a 2-step process, but its better than having to waste that XP intall time. PLus you have a backup of your clean XP install everytime - you just need to reinstall that if your XP feels sluggish or have too much crapola in it in the future.

no i don't have norton ghost.... but how can i change the partition sizes with only pm5.0 (which only runs on 98) ??

Basically you only have a few choices...

a) go get a copy of Partition Magic 7.0 and do the resize...

b) wipe the drive, re-partition and re-install your system...

c) get a new drive, set up XP on it, and move any necessary files from the old drive to the new one.

Pretty much that's it... Windows XP will not let you use Partition magic 5.0. on it.

hmm ok.... i guess i'll look into ebay to try and get a copy of 7.0 for cheap !! hey thanks guys for your help !!

mojo, thanks for the link !! but i already got PM7.0. well i tried xp on my old machine first and i really like it. it automatically installed all my peripherals (printers, scanner, digital camera, etc) without ever prompting for the installation cd.... and it seems more stable. (although 98se is pretty stable too).

but now there is one problem.... my system lost the sound. anyone know why ??

i was actually replying in part to df's statement of "you need to upgrade." not that it's just df, but i hear that statement a lot and i think that people accept it as a natural thing that just ain't natural. most of us work pretty hard for our money, and i'm of the opinion that we should decide what we do with our money instead of upgrading as slaves to the system the rest of our lives. we should demand better performance from the OS and its ability to work on stuff we already have, not so much as buy into the "oh, i wanna run this new OS, so i better upgrade my rig" mentality.

i agree that win98 is an old OS. but it should work anyhow. i'm running rh 7.2 right now, and i'm pretty sure i liked 6.1 better. i'll "upgrade" to 7.1 when i get the chance. 7.1 with a current kernel would prolly be better than the "latest" rh release.

planned obsolescence was supposedly a lesson we learned back in the 70s, but apparently we forgot that lesson and grew to accept it yet again.

ok, mr defensive pants...since i did read the whole thread the first time i posted and also noted that you weren't the only one that said such stuff, then i guess i dunno what to say since i still have a hard time swallowing the idea. as far as being "better off" doing whatever, that may very well be. but as far as the upgrade comment, it's still true. and i don't recall me saying anything about an xp upgrade

so what are you defending anyhow? it's not like i said anything bad or whatever. i just noted that upgrade was suggested and i pointed out the futility of it.

actually i was planning to upgrade to xp since my 98se has been running quite well for me. and i also believe in "if it aint broke dont fix it" theory !! but few months ago some of the depts in my company has upgraded all the computers to xp so i had a chance to play with it (i am with the tech support dept) and the more i worked on it the more i like..... and thats why i made the decision to upgrade to xp.

now that everything in xp seems almost automatic, the only thing i miss was the "manual installs/configurations" part that i need to deal with in 98.
