XP help

Trying to install XP home and I can't get past the drivers. Everytime I run setup it seems to fail at a different file. I keep getting the BSOD. Occasionally, I get the PAGE FAULT IN NON PAGED AREA message as well as the IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL. Got past those problems but it now fails trying to load dll files. So far, these have failed on me.

acpi.sys
cnbjmon.dll
pciide.sys
usbport.sys
usbehci.sys

Last but not least, trying to update the BIOS gives me an unmatched BIOS error. I used all 4 BIOS provided from the ASUS website.

Please help before I use this thing for target practice! Thank you so much.

Athlon XP 1800+
A7V8X-X MB
PNY PC2100 256mb
Radeon 7500 64mb PCI (in slot 1)

You're installing from a legal, original copy of WinXP, right?
(A lot of the ISOs that are traded on the internet are missing files)

Assuming all things are kosher, it looks like you may have some weird memory issues. Make sure you are not overclocking and your RAM is set to SPD in the bios. Some place to start.

Legal

Yes the copy is legal. OEM version actually that I bought when I bought the MB. I'm not overclocking but I'll try getting new memory to see if it helps. Thanks.

Re: Legal

Update your BIOS! That matters BIG TIME! Then pull out all our RAM except one chip and strip out any other non essential components till it works.

BIOS. DarkFury taught me that one when I encountered installation problems. Once I set it for SPD like Bires says, it popped right in. Wasted all day trying until then.

BIOS

Still trying to update the BIOS. Followed the website directions from ASUS but I keep getting the message that the BIOS doesn't match the MB. Can't find anything on their help screen to address this defect.

I only have one strip of 256mb PC2100 and one PCI video card in slot one. Not much else attached. I'm going to try to get new memory and see if that helps.

BIOS flash

No, it didn't flash correctly. The onboard BIOS seems to be working fine so I didn't worry about it. I just can't upgrade the BIOS.

Sounds like you're trying to flash it with the wrong bios. You sure you got the right upgrade for your mobo?

BIOS

I'm pretty sure. I downloaded it from the ASUS site and triple checked it. I also tried all three versions they have in their BIOS section. The next step is to get a different brand of memory and see if that helps.

Angry ASUS Help

Sitting on hold with ASUS help for 30 minutes. Someone picked up 15 minutes ago only to put me back on hold after getting my case number. Where do they get these people?

The SPD setting was in the harddrive settings. For some reason using AUTO it wouldn't recognize the HDD properly. My board is ASUS (A7N8X Deluxe). I also had to tell it to boot from the disc drive- it was set to floppy as the primary boot source.

Keep in mind that tech support only costs money for these companies. They don't make a dime on it. So, unfortunately, a lot of companies skimp on it and either don't have enough people, or hire a boat load of weetahds.

Help desk

I think this guy was a wethead. He didn't tell me he was putting me on hold. All of the sudden I heard ENYA and I knew I had a long wait. Unfortunately he won. I had to hang up.

A little more information...I tried formatting the drive from a floppy and it wouldn't recognize the HDD. Kept getting Invalid Drive Specification message.

I've got the BIOS setup so that it boots from the Floppy then the CD-RW.

Unhappy Hope

I hope it's that easy. I was using the floppy to update the BIOS. I also tried making XP boot disks and running the installation from there. Got the same type of errors. Can't get home to try all this stuff out.

Thanks for all your help. I'll keep you posted on the final outcome.

Talking Floppy

No. Using the floppy was one of the solutions I tried incase the CD was the problem. I created boot disks to see if I could narrow that down.

I finally got it to load! Darkfury, Snotrocket! YOU DA MAN!! It was a combination of everything. I recreated a BIOS floppy and was able to flash the BIOS. I reseated just about everything I could. I switched the boot order of the devices and disabled the memory cacheing.

I'm still getting the BSOD but it's a new problem. The acpi.sys failed or something, but at least I'm one step closer to a functioning system. Thanks for your help.

ACPI is the power management feature. You can prolly get around this by disabling power management in your BIOS OR enabling it if it is already disabled and likely the culprit.

Let us know how it goes.

Angry Fell apart

Man,

All that hard work fell apart last night. I got the BSOD again and I couldn't recover. I had to wipe out the drive and reinstall XP. Still trying to get a successful install of XP. I've disabled everything extraneous right now including power management and my memory setting is By SPD. Maybe I just need to lay off a couple of days and get some sleep. YAWN.... Can't wait for my KVM switch to come in the mail. I'm getting tired of switching cables all the time. I'll keep you posted about any future errors I'm getting.

Motherboard

Personally, I think the mobo is the problem. I think the XP doesn't like my mobo. Or maybe it's me. XP doesn't like me. Maybe I'll try using linux. Hmmm...

Mobo

I think my mobo may be trying to do too much. It's never a clean install everytime. I'm still getting dlls and stuff that fail the first time but pass on the retry. It's never consistent either. I need a vacation.

BIOS

I actually got the BIOS to flash eventually. I had to create a new boot disk so I think the last floppy I used was bad. That's what I get for reusing disks over and over. The load was smoother but not completely. The devices are set to AUTO. Including the HDD. I'll reset that and see if it helps.

Oh and yes I used the 1005 version of the BIOS.

Memory

Asus says that I should get better memory than PNY. His words are that if I'm going to go with "cheap" memory at least get Kingston. Any suggestions?

My EPOX MB likes the Kingston DDR 333 but not PNY DDR 266. I had random crashes with PNY.

Maybe that's my problem. I'll look for a crucial sale.

Newegg

I saw the same deal at Newegg. I wasn't sure if it was good or not since the PNY was more expensive. Thanks for the advice. I'll pick it up right now.

Actually, the Corsair PC2100 512mb is 48.50 free shipping.

Unhappy Update

OK. New update on my progress with this XP load. I disabled the modem and the Audio on the BIOS and removed the Network option from the boot list. I actually got it to start installing winXP before crashing with the BSOD. It gave me a memory address and advised me to check my video drivers and hardware.

Yeah. I went ahead and bought some last night when I saw the price drop. Newegg had the same price. Thanks for the info.

BSOD update

I'm getting a BSOD now with the Page fault in non-paged area message when it attempts to go to win32k.sys. Any ideas?

It's also not loading shell32.dll correctly.

Angry Memory bad

For those that are having the same problems I'm having, I wanted to post an update so this might help you with your problems. I ran a memory check on my PNY PC2100 256MB and found out that it was bad. Gotta go back to Staples to see if they'll give me a new stick. In the meantime, I have to wait for my Corsair 512MB PC2700 to come in the mail. I used the DocMemory 2.0 program found on

http://www.simmtester.com/

Good luck with your troubles.

Thanks for the info. While I have found that RAM rarely goes bad, that makes it all the more dificult to troubleshoot when it does.

Talking Bad memory

It goes bad readily when you buy the cheap stuff.
