explorer.exe being a resource hog?

I can't figure it out. explorer.exe just loves to randomly eat up at least 50 megs of ram and 100% of the cpu. so my computer grinds to a halt. the only way to make it stop is to restart the computer and then i'll be fine until it does it again.

anyone else encounter this? (this is win xp)

yes, i've had it happen to me a few times. It seems to me that it mostly happens when I haven't rebooted for over 4 days...

Scan for viruses lately?

Also,

- turn off the indexing service and any other proggy's that use mega resources in the background.

- turn off realtime virus scanning and see what the result is.

Explorer only does this when there is a process that hangs. You should be able to use Task Manager to find any rogue processes and kill them.

You might also want to use a memory manager to free memory previously used by programs that are poorly coded to free this memory on exit.

You should actually be able to kill the explorer process itself, which will spawn a new session of the shell and return your memory to normal.

I know I'm resurrecting a year old thread. I'm getting the same problem every so often and hope that someone can address. Does anyone have any solution to this that does not involve restarting your computer? Oh and i found out you can't just kill the process, because you will be forced to restart.

Have you tried using the New Process button in the Applications tab on Task Manager (click then enter "explorer"). This should bring up a new explorer task without starting.

Does this apply to all versions of Windows? I have this problem with 98SE.
