WinXP Pro : Can be installed on only **ONE** computer...not two

So, I noticed on some earlier threads that most ppl claim that WinXP Pro can be installed on two computers with the same Key. I tried, in didn't work, so I called "Richard" from the activation # and he said that only the volume license versions, not Home or Pro allow multiple installs on the same key.

Thats pretty odd... because every copy I've seen says right on the Activation Key sticker that it is good for 2 PC's. Are you using a copy that came with a PC? Or did you buy one from say, NewEgg or the equivalent?

I dont see why it would work on 2, that would ruin the whole point of microsoft activating CD keys.

I got mine from MS at a 2002 .net developer ralley. I have the CD and the CD envelope...I see nothing that says one way or the other, just that installing the software without the CDKEY is illegal, and don't lost the CD key, and something about signing over your mortal soul, but that's in really small print.

I have also heard that if you change your computer enough through upgrades that you won't be able to install it again either since it thinks it is in a different machine.

This is also true. You have to call the MS CSRs and they give you an unlock code. Irritating, indeed, 'specially since my copy of WinXP (the legal one anyway) has been installed on three different Mobos in the past year.

Thank God I work at a big company and don't have to deal with all that...
