New Microsoft Patches

Microsoft has recently released information on a *new* security
vulnerability to affect Microsoft operating systems (details here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec...n/ms03-039.asp). An
exploit has also been recently been released that takes advantage of
this vulnerability. It will only be a short time before a virus worm
similar to "blaster" or "nachi/welchia" is released.

If you have any of the below operating systems, please download and
install the following patches immediately. This supersedes all previous
patches:

Windows XP
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...46-x86-ENU.exe

Windows 2000
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...46-x86-ENU.exe

Windows NT

this is the stuff FUD is made of. fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

many of the complaints about linux i've heard have been from people who took microsoft this and that classes, get a degree in it, use it daily...and then go on to say how it's different from windows or whatever and there's too much to learn about it, it's not "user friendly", etc. basically, it's not windows. well duh! if you spend all that time training for windows, to give linux a fair shake, you'd have to have training for it as well!

sure, it's not for gramma or the average desktop user...yet. but with the support of a growing user base, it will be

I think you read too much into a fairly benign statement. He only said he didn't want to fool around with it just yet. Perhaps glagic uses his computer for something important right now like a business or school and can't afford spending the time required right now to learn a new operating system, be it Linux, OSX, or whatever.

I did the same thing with OSX. I use my computer for a lot of things, and when my then girlfriend and now wife and I moved in together, she had were Macs. I now think I could switch to one full time if I wanted to, but only because I played around with them every chance I got to learn my way around. But I couldn't have just thrown my PCs out in the first week, I had stuff to do! And I consider myself to be very techie.

So I don't think it's so much FUD as a simple fact that learning something different takes time, and if you don't HAVE the time you tend to stick with what you know.

I'm just glad they actually offer the patches in a timely fashion. Many other co.'s don't.
