Lightbulb Bit Torrent Question

I have a friedn who is downloading the same file I am, the file being about 700mb or so, he is downloading the file around 100/kbps while I have never been able to download over 15/kbps. Both of us have similar systems and bandwith. I am using a software firewall (Blackice) but he is not. Does anyone have any help for me or maybe some good suggestions?

you'll need to open up some of the ports that torrent uses to get the higher speeds.

Bittorrent downloads in proportion to what you upload, if you arn't uploading for some reason, you won't download either.

Not sure what you mean by opening ports?

Funny cause I'm uploading with a share rating around 3.0 or so, speeds are pretty low there too but faster than downloading.

another thing, if you have dsl, or similar connection where the upload is capped, what often happens is that you upload to your max limit, and don't leave any room for sending out requests for download. Try capping your upload to a couple K below your cap.

Getting a new router with built in Nat/Firewall protection made by Netgear model RP614NA. A friend turned me on to this one because apprently it is pretty user friendly as I am not a network friendly guy but I'm curious will this help my problem? He said I should be able to open all my ports with the software that comes with this router, anyone have any experience with this router?

Can anyone give me a better understanding of how this is better than p2p sharing? What about security wise? Can you be tracked just like in Napster?

bit torrent is wide open. everyone can see your ip. I've heard that the mpaa is watching some popular trackers for movies and some people have already gotten letters from them.
