I used to have a hotmail account. I got tired of wading through hundreds of spam emails a day just for the few odd emails I might receive on it so I let it "go away".

Neither because both of them are spammed to death.

I haven't used free email in about 4 years.

Why do you guys use free email rather than the email services of your ISP or even your own website (if you have one)?

In the past 7 years, I've had about 5 different work e-mail addresses and three different personal ISP addresses. The only address I have that never changes is my Hotmail.

And that is why the spammers love it so much.

That's a good point. I guess I'm just spoiled in having an IEEE e-mail alias that I can redirect to whatever address I want.

It be nice if comcast would let me set up an email account with them. Their comcast internet site doesn't recognize me as a customer and their comcast cable site says I have an email with them that then refers me to their comcast internet site. I don't worry about it...yahoo is enough for me and I like their spam filters better than hotmails.

hotmail's spam filters are quite useless. I have to set it on exclusive mode, which is a pain. but after a few months of use on exclusive mode, i have all my "safe addresses" stored, and most of the good mail comes through, and none of the spam.

When you move, your email stays the same. It irritates me when ppl change their email address every year-becomes hard to keep track of ppl.

FYI: the nifty forums.gotapex.com email account has a 6MB allocation, and is really fast. In the 3.5 years I have used it, It's been down maybe 5-8 times...maybe.

I can't recommend it enough.

Of course if it gets too popular, they might start charging for its use, ala usa.net

Do any of these free email services let you access it as a pop account or can they only be accessed trough an internet browser?

When you add an account you have the choice of adding a few different types of email account(Exchange, Pop3). One of these options is http. Click on that one and then add your hotmail information. Your Outlook now synchs with your Hotmail account. The only bearable way to use Hotmail I think.
