.WMV in Firebird

Everytime there is a link to a .wmv file while using firebird it tries to open it up as a webpage and I just get all the ascii text code for it. I tried looking for a way in the preferences to manage files but couldn't locate it. Anyone know how to make it so that .wmvs open in my default players instead of trying to be opened as webpages? (Default player is Winamp)

It's through no fault of Firebird's that this happens, but rather, IE's. You see, Firebird adheres stricly to web standards, so when it encounters a file that does not have a MIME type defined on the server side, it does not know how to handle the file and you will see only ASCII code. Because IE does not adhere to all web standards, it simply ignores the fact that there is no MIME definition and will open it with the default application for a file of that extension.

From what I can tell, the only way to get around this is to save the file to disk and open it.

I have the same problem. Coleslaw is toally right on with the explanation. Things like that will prevent Firebird from taking off into the main stream. When Joe Schmoe is trying to use it and gets that crap happening, he is gonna wonder why it doesnt work correcly. One of two things will happen. He will use IE because it "works in IE" or he will ask why it doesnt work in Firebird. Someone will tell him that Firebird isnt the problem becuase it was implemented "correctly". Then he will use IE. He isnt going to understand why something that adheres to some standard he couldnt give two $hits about doensnt "work".

Well I mean Firebird is technically right by applying the standard, but people want functionality. They're stupid for not including this or at least a way to associate the files with a certain player.

Apparently this is fixed in Firebird 0.8.

You can check out the latest nightly builds.

Actually, I just verified that this now works by installing the latest build of 0.8 using the FirebirdSetup.exe file. I tested a link to a video that I knew that I had problems with before and it brought up a window asking me if I wanted to use the default application. There is also a nifty new download manager that looks pretty useful.

When this happens to me, I just right click and "Save Link Target As...", then open the file in an application that supports it.

Technically, anything pre-1.0 is beta, so any version of Firebird that you are currently using (0.7, etc) IS a beta.

The nightly builds are simply the latest version of the code that the developers have compiled. There may be bugs that have not been worked out, but I have not yet encounted any in this latest 0.8 build.
