It will probably be a while, maybe a couple of months, before you see distros rolling out with kernel 2.6 as their main kernel. They'll need to do a fair amount of testing before they make a distro public with something so new.

If you're adventurous, you can take an existing distro, download the source, and compile your own kernel.

Or, there are a few distros that probably have 2.6 kernels you can run as "test" kernels. They're just not fully supported yet. I know Gentoo does, because I'm using it. I would guess some of the other distros like Mandrake do as well.

The 2.6 kernel does a fair amount of things under the hood. Better hardware support, better preemptible kernel support, better virtual memory usage, among literally hundreds of other improvements. A few are major, most are small. Overall, it's a pretty solid update.

it's not too hard to insert the kernel into an already running distro. if you got a box up and running right now, it would be a lot less hassle to just upgrade the kernel. that's part of the linux advantage.

You just have to d/l it from somewhere, compile it, and apply it... right?

I was thinking about doing it over the weekend, but i got sidetracked, and then i got scared, because i don't wanna fvck up...=\

well, when you insert the kernel into the directory, just name it accordingly and point at it with the bootloader. for example, if you're using grub, it will list the bootable kernels. if your newly compiled kernel doesn't boot, then just reboot to a working kernel. just don't remove your old kernel and you'll be fine.

but yeah, just download it, configure and compile it, and then insert it and edit a couple files. check out the usual suspects for instructions.
