Can't delete an unwanted file

Ok, it goes like this...
I most often use a certain progam...
and one day without my knowledge it downloaded a file that is about 650megs long...
I have tried to delete it, rename it and even tried to delete it in SAFEMODE, but I have had no luck...
can someone help me get rid of this...

Very vague. Embarassed about the program and what it downloaded hmmm?

Try this. Go into a program like Notepad, goto file-open find the file you want to delete and delete it from there. This works great for deleting corrupted avi files that explorer hangs up on.

As for as being embarassed about the program and what was download it's not that...
I just was trying to avoid the confusion around the forums, cause you know how some people are about using file-sharing programs...

I was using MIRC and it downloaded an .avi file of some type...

What error does it give you? Something cryptic? If it tells you something about it being read only, you can change the attributes.

From a DOS windows "CMD.exe" use the Attrib.exe command:

If the file were c:\garbage.txt, you would type:

Attrib -r -a -s -h c:\garbage.txt

This would strip off all attributes that might keep you from deleting it due to its status.

C:\>attrib /?
Displays or changes file attributes.

ATTRIB [+R | -R] [+A | -A ] [+S | -S] [+H | -H] [drive:][path][filename]
[/S [/D]]

+ Sets an attribute.
- Clears an attribute.
R Read-only file attribute.
A Archive file attribute.
S System file attribute.
H Hidden file attribute.
[drive:][path][filename]
Specifies a file or files for attrib to process.
/S Processes matching files in the current folder
and all subfolders.
/D Processes folders as well.

Are you using Windows XP? If so, this may help:

"There is a problem that XP exhibits in deleting or moving broken AVI files...it won't let you!

The reason is when an AVI file is clicked on/highlighted, shmedia.dll by default reads the entire contents of the file before allowing any access to the file. Basically what this means is: as soon as you right click a broken avi file, shmedia.dll hangs and won't allow further file access to delete the broken file.

Simply delete the following registry key to prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file queries on these files."

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32 "

Is there a way to repair/play a partially downloaded avi?

I've also used this little workaround: Rename (don't try to delete) the file in Safe Mode, then reboot and delete it. Odd, but it's saved me several times. As to why it will let me rename it and not delete it, ask Uncle Bill.

Maybe a sticky should be made for solutions for commonly asked questions. I've seen this question asked a few times and others concerning avi files.
