I thought SpeedStep was built into all mobile P4 chips... is this what you're using?
It shouldn't do much at all other than heat it up; you'll probably hear your fan come on and stay on more often than normal, but other than that, you shouldn't notice too much of a difference. What are you running the processor at full capacity for, anyway? The whole purpose of SpeedStep is to evaluate what program you're using, how much of a load it's taking on the processor, and adjusting the processor speed accordingly to prolong battery life. It should automatically disable when you plug in your system, but if you want to run it while being plugged in (I'm assuming yours is a different program than the Intel flavor), then it's your laptop. It'll probably just get really hot. Fun fact: Why are mobile computers now being called "notebooks"? One user took the term "laptop" literally and ended up with 3rd degree burns on her legs from the heat generated by newer processors (after approximately 3 hours of having the laptop ON her lap without moving),. As a result, one major computer manufacturer changed the marketing term to "notebook" to avoid future legal fiascos. |

Are you talking about SpeederXP? The only SpeedStep I know of is the same one that jerms is talking about.

The SpeedSwitchXP website seems to show it as the Intel SpeedStep stuff but with a GUI that lets you manually change the settings. I'd say that unless you really need to keep the processor speed constant (and why would you?), you don't really need it unless you want to see a visual representation of how your system is running.
However, if you do run it, you may only want to if your system is one of the ones the program has been tested on. It shouldn't cause any problems, or at least it doesn't look like it will. |
