I need to install Acrobat Reader on this machine, and I click on the Acrobat.exe file (which unpacks a whole buncha stuff to the Temp directory), then nothing happens. I checked Task Mngr and Acrobat.exe is still running. Then I tried going into the Temp directory, then try to Open the Setup.exe file, and it won't even open.
I can't install other programs either. Any clue what I should do? I have Windows XP with Service Pack 1. ![]()

is this a work machine? you might not have rights to install anything, and that is why it is holding you up.

Have you scanned for adware or viruses? Those types of things can often interfere with certain programs running.
If you rename setup.exe to something like notsetup.exe does it run?

I'm performing Ad-Aware 6.0 check and Norton AV 8.0 scans right now... I'll post what comes up
It's my home computer, and I was logged in as Administrator. I tried making another user and running an install program from there but it didn't work. Same with renaming the file to Setup1.exe. I was able to install aaw6.exe though (Adaware)... hmmm, just half of them run and sit there like nothing happened -- except the _____.exe is listed as active process. Thanks so far... hope I don't have to reformat AGAIN! ![]() PS - I noticed that my LiveUpdate for virus definitions didn't take when I tried to update it a few days ago -- checkin that out on my 56K (4 megs, ooof) ![]() UPDATE - Scanned for viruses, found W32.Welchia.Worm in my C:\WINDOWS\system32\wins\DLLHOST.EXE file. Quarantined it. Executables still won't work! ![]() Last edited by skiAtomic : 01-05-2004 at 03:48 PM. |

Are you by chance running a regular version of Kazaa (like non kazaa lite or an older version of it maybe) because I had a friend who had that same exact problem, but only when Kazaa was open.

Nada to the Kazaa... I came from a clean install of XP a week ago, and just put the Service Pack 1 on today. Haven't installed any of the other security updates though for XP yet -- might that fix it? (I'm on 56K, takes a while to update, but I might as well try for it)
See the UPDATE 2 posts up ![]() |

Ugh, Welchia/Nachi is a royal pain. You'll keep getting it if you don't get patched up, so you definitely should make sure you get the other updates.
Meanwhile, will regedit run? If so, try adding this to your registry: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/exefix.reg If not, you can try renaming regedit.exe regedit.com and then go to the command line and type start regedit.com. From there, import that registry file and see if that helps. |
