The AIM service can't be reached

Alright so out of nowhere I cant log on to aim. I tried using different screen names and i tried logging onto my XP with different users. I even removed aim and reinstalled it. Whenever i try to log on it says "The AIM (R) service can't be reached." I tried auto-configing the connection is the setup menu and i even tried using a proxy. re did all of my network settings. even deleted and re configged the home/office network stuff. disabled my nic, re-enabled. None of this is working...anybody know how this problem can be solved?

BTW: I can also use everything else that requires the internet

Sounds like port blockage. Does it ever get past the "1. Connecting..." message?

You didn't state clearly if this was at a home or at an office, but the first thing I would check would be if your router will allow port 5190 to pass through. A lot of businesses block this.

If this is at home, make sure you didn't get overzealous in blocking ports on your router.

Is it possible that your aim server was down? I have days where it drops off on its own for a few hours when they are doing upgrades and stuff. The way i know that thats the case is that it worked and now it doesnt, and i haven't changed any settings. So i guess the question is, did you just install aim on this computer? or change anything?

this is actually at school, i go to the university of iowa, and all of the people on my floor have their aim running fine. i'm not going through a router, which makes things even more troubling. I don't even make it to the connecting screen.... i'm going home for spring break today, and i think i'm gunna bring the comp with me and try it at home, see if it fairs the same on my network at my house. please keep posting ideas, and i'll keep you updated as to whether at trip home temporarily fixes the problem.

thanks

So you're using dialup?

If you are connected to the school's LAN, then you are going through a router-- theirs. It could be some weirdness on their router. You might want to see how other people have their settings.

I'm interested in the fact that you aren't even getting to the point where it tries to connect to AIM. If I understand correctly, you see something like this:

but not something like this?

When the port has been blocked, it usually sticks at the second screen and then gives that "can't be reached" error.

Let us know what happens at home.

I'm at home now, still doesn't work here, so its just my computer being stupid. no, it was a lan at school and my roommate wasn't having any problems. he looked at my settings and they matched his. it just went crazy after i restarted one time, so i could try and figure out what i did between restarts, but that's like 4 days.

i see the connecting screen for no more than a second, and then it tells me it can't connect... i'm completely puzzled....

problem solved... i was really pissed off, saw there was some program running that shouldn't be, so i popped open zone alarm, tried to sign on.. it asked me to confirm that it was okay for aim to access the internet, i told it okay.. and its been smooth sailing since..

thanks for the feedback
