Question "System" is pegging the CPU

The Head Chick in Charge of my building came to me this morning, saying her laptop was running very slowly. Yep, sure enough it was. I pulled up Task Manager and sorted the Processes by CPU utilization. "System" was hitting the CPU at 75-90%. Now the odd part: It stayed like that until a meeting reminder popped up from Outlook, then it fell to 0%. Also, the Memory Used was only 40k. My own computer shows System as using 232k, and the box I'm using now shows System as using 240k.

The OS is XP Pro SP1. Any ideas?

tia

sounds like a trojan or a worm to me..
does she have an anitvirus with up to date definitions ?
a trojan scanner like TheCleaner,pestpatrol,SwatIt.. ?

my guess would be that she has WORM_COLEVO.A or maybe Trojan.Mitglieder.B or even Backdoor.OptixPro.13.C

Not "system.exe", just "system". I really doubt this behavior is virus or worm related. Our systems are very tightly locked down, and she's a smart user that knows how to avoid them (from emails and such), etc. I've done some research and it could be some sort of driver issue. Still no firm leads though.
