windows xp (possible mobo prob?)
I have a new machine im building it has a msi kt3 ultra mobo with athlon xp 2000+ chip, 512 kingston pc2100 ram. When i try installing windows xp it keeps saying random files can not be installed. Ive tried multiple Windows cd's and it does the same thing. The weird thing is that when one file says it can not be copied i can insert a different copy of windows xp and it starts working then another file can't be copied. Anyone experience this problem?

The CDROM could be defective, or just picky about the media. I tried to install WinXP on one machine and had similar problems. On another machine it would read the CD. The only difference was that one machine had a CDROM and the other had a DVD drive. The DVD drive could read the CD, but the CDROM had problems.

are the cd's copies or original media? What about the harddrive, is it new or has it been pulled from another system. If the harddrive is crashing, then you will not be able to write to it, and a similar error will occur.

new cd-rom worked, which is weird because the cd-rom used previously works fine on another machine.

It's either CPU or motherboard problem. I had the same problem with the Dell 400SC. Dell replaces both CPU and motherboard just to be sure though and it works.
