Can Windows Explorer get Corrupted?

I was burning some CDRs this weekend using Nero. I added 14 avi files from "C" Drive in one burn and from an external USB 2.0 hard drive in another burn.

I attempted to transfer some of these files from the "C" drive to the external burner. Halfway through the transfer of a file, the computer froze up. This happened several times. I even tried transferring a file within "C" drive to another folder. Same thing happened.

It also appears that it takes forever for Windows Explorer to find the file. I also noticed that the same thing was happening in Nero when it was converting a file from avi to vcd. Sometimes it would take 5 minutes to locate a file before converting it.

I thought that the USB device was the culprit, so I disconnected it, but I still have the problem.

EDIT: It does appear to have the problem mostly with the USB hard drive. I am not sure about the quality of the USB cable. When I move it around at the external enclosure, the red light flickers which signals data transfer, but at other times only the green light is lit.

When it freezes up, CtrlAltDel has no effect whatsoever. I have to turn the computer off and restart.

Oh, it's Windows 98SE.

Trust me... it is MUCH better than 98SE. C'mon... it's ok... just try it.

I have over 2000 avi files (130 GB). If anything gets messed up during the transition to XP, I won't be a happy camper>

Get a new HD & use that as your boot drive. Load up XP, and then pop in your old drive as a data drive. Once you're satisified with the new install, just delete the /windows directory off of your old drive.

I can temporarily have Windows 98 and XP on the same computer? I thought that one was FAT32 and the other was NTFS.

you can run XP on a FAT32 partition. you just wont get the encryption and compression features that NTFS integrates with windows.

XP and Win98 can coexist on the same system. I have XP on separate partitions. Kids can boot to 98 (Fat32), I can boot to XP (NTFS). Someday I'll probably end up getting rid of the 98 side, but I like having it so that there's no way they can mess up my XP.
