WinME --> WinXP (home)
Has anyone else here done this upgrade before?
I found a link on the MS website with an entire powerpoint presentation that says it's good, but when I run the compatability wizard from the CD onto the to-be-upgraded computer it says it's not compatable. Any tips? |

Never use the upgrades. I have tried them before, and when i was running and upgraded 2k, it would have very strange problems and freeze frequently. I would recommend a clean install and reinstall.
WinXP is built on the NT / 2000 Platform and ME is just like Win98. Two different beasts. I would just do a clean install.

I wish I could do a clean install. I'm unfortunately doing this for another person and the desire to have things remain similar outweighs the optimal clean install. I've been hearing that it's possible with a download of some kind, so I'mm going to go searching.
Have people had many problems with upgrading though? |

I would tell that person to upgrade it himself, and not take it upon yourself for later and undue complaints because they wanted you to do a straight upgrade. Way too many headaches to do such a thing. I know, I've tried and failed miserably. ME just doesn't seem to like being usurped by XP Home or Pro.

Yup - it's worth the extra time to do a clean install. Tell them they can do one now or one in a few weeks when they can't stand the errors anymore.
You'll see slowdowns, garbage in the registry, HD space wasted, and possibily application or blue screen errors. It's a nice thought, but MS can't get things nearly as stable in an upgrade like they can in a clean install. |

Thanks for the advice all.
No matter what I do from here, the system is much more stable and quicker, even in ME. Maybe I'll just keep it at that and not deal with potentially creating problems. Thanks. |
