MSN Messenger 6.1 Crashes

My Aunt has been calling me for computer help.

She uses MSN messenger on a pretty nasty old win98 box. A few days ago she installed the newest version, 6.1, and now whenever she tries to start up MSN Messenger, the Explorer process dies, and she reboots. She's tried uninstalling / re-installing MSN messenger, but I haven't had her try running WindowsUpdate yet.

Anyone know where I can get her an old copy of MSN messenger? TIA.

I'm using version 4.7 which is way old -- before all the fancy avatar business was introduced. Many updates came out since, but I saw through the BS and stuck with it. It's pretty minimal and primitive, but it's small and never has problems. Best of all, it's not integrated into windows. In other words, it's more like an independent application, so you can completely turn it off when you're not using it.

Just search in google for it and you'll fine many foreign sites that provide all the older versions. I'd recommend one of the 4.x series versions.

They had an old computer running win98 with 128 megs of ram. they hadn't formatted since they bought the computer, so it was infested with nasty programs and all sorts of garbage. I'm in boston, and they are in San Fran, so there wasn't much i could do for them.

i just bought them a new computer, and they are happy. thanks for all the ideas.

Ack. I bought them a new computer so I wouldn't have to field daily problem and mistakes questions. The computer arrived last wednesday, and i've gotten so many calls already..... I should have just bought a typewriter for them
