Mac/Windows File Sharing... Viable? Easy?

Okay so I currently use a Windows XP desktop computer, but I'm considering getting an Apple PowerBook (mainly so I could take notes and go online on campus). Would I be able to transfer files between the two via a regular cross-over ethernet cable? Assuming I am able to transfer documents, is MS Word:Mac pretty compatible with regular Word? Is it easy to share iTunes files between computers? Thanks in advance!

If all else fails, you could use a finger drive. LIke a 128 mb. I use it to take files all around and it works between macs and pcs... I know you are probably looking for a simpler solution, but i just figured i would offer up one that i know works.

It's very easy to share anothers music by itunes. I'm on a PC and i have a networked playlist of my brothers music which is on a mac. Everytime i click on the the playlist the connection is established. There is a little button that appears and will disconnect after 1 click. very easy.

You should be able to connect to Windows shares easily with a new Powerbook. iTunes playlists also work just fine across platforms. I use both my Macs and Windows PCs daily and it really feels seamless.
