Word: Crashing and Burning

So my uncle has a compaq laptop with Office XP Pro, and now for some reason, whenever he launches Word, it crashes after a few seconds, or if he opens a doc, it crashes immediately. He popped the installation CD back in and ran the "Repair" function to no avail. (it keeps wanting to send the error report after it just shuts itself down).

Then he uninstalled the entire Office Suite, and then re-installed it - again having the same problem.

Have any of you run into this?

Thanks!

I've never had any problems with Office. Three things maybe:

1. something is accessing those files at the same time (virus, virus protection, spyware)
2. Bad memory
3. Bad sectors on your HD

Actually, there is a bunch of anti-spyware & anti-virus software running on the machine.

Another thing is that wordpad seems to be crashing too... It seems like it might have something to do with HP printer drivers conflicting with word and word pad.
