Fixing the Function Keys on a Dell Latitude

I have a D600 and recently got a replacement harddrive for it. After re-installing WinXP and all the drivers from the drivers CD, everything is up and running again except:

The little windows and status indicators that used to pop up when I'd use the function keys don't work anymore. For some of them (like changing the volume and screen brightness) the little status indicator isn't the most important thing, so I don't really mind. However, function+F3 used to pop up a little battery meter and that no longer works either. Also, function+F10 would pop open the CD tray but does not work now.

Has anybody else run into this problem? Does it sound like I'm just missing a simple utility off of the CD? There is a whole bunch of crap on the cd and it tells you which ones you need for your system. I'd say about 10% of the stuff on there I needed, so I think it would be difficult to go through installing all of the untilities one by one.

Spoke with the dell "tech support" guys who reiterate the FAQ page but they were not able to help.

I have never had that probelm before and we have replace 6 hard drives in 2 Latitude D600's in the office.

As a side note, keep your crap backed up, these had drives die faster than anything I have ever seen before. They are going out about once every 3-4 months here.
