cutting out clips from a video

hi. i got a big 10 minutes video .avi file that's a compilation of some stuff. i wans't expecting it to be made into a compilation and i can't get the individual files. is there a program (preferably free) that'll allow me to cut out specific parts from the video and make it a separate file? also, how can i make still-shots from the video? thanks!

I use SnagIt, but I'm sure there are freeware packages that'll do the same thing.
