When can I steal back an expired domain?
So like lots of people here I have a couple of domain names that I purchased before the internet was cool. One of the domains I owned lapsed because I changed my email address (I switched providers) and so when it was time to renew I didn't get notified which then resulted in somenoe else getting the name. It has been buggin me for years, but I always check to see if he let it lapse so I can get it back. According to whois.net, registration for the domain ended on November 12th.
I thought that I should be able to purchase the domain 7 days after it expired because of that new law, but it still isn't available. In the registration info, it says this: Quote:
What does Locked mean? Why can't I purchase the domain yet? Bastard took it from me, and I want it back!!! ![]() I'm just kidding. I would love to get it back so any help would be appreicated. Thanks!

As I recall, the rule was that registrars wouldn't release domains to the public until 30-60 days after the expiration date. Has this changed?'
My understanding is that "locked" means that the registrar won't change or release the domain record unless specifically directed by the domain owner (this is what GoDaddy's "lock" means). I don't know what it means when the domain expires, though. You could try to use one of those "domain-snatching" services, but I don't know how good they are and/or if they're worth the money. For what it's worth, a few years ago I tried to grab a domain that I'd had my eye on, and I waited 45 days after its expiration. The guy who owned it had a web site that hadn't been updated in 3 or 4 years. I even sent a note to the original registrar (not Network Solutions-- it was someone I'd never heard of) and they sent me a blow-off letter. Next thing I knew, the guy who owned the domain renewed it for 10 years. Good luck! |

Name-services.com is enom.com. You might check it out there and see if it will let you buy it. They also offer watch-dog type services (it is called club-drop) to allow you to purchase domains as they come available. I am an enom reseller if you need any help.. I can also create you a discounted login.

Thanks fellas. I was thinking a while back about asking the dude to sell it back to me, but I feared that I would have the same result as you caribiner. Bbrian I am interested in going through your company to purchase it if possible. I will do the research and then get back to you.
