Win XP Remote Access
Was wondering is an XP Pro computer can remotely control (work on) an XP Home computer. Both have SP2.
If so, how would I go about enabling. Thanks! |

I think you can only do it the other way around - control XP Pro from a Home machine. Details:

I tried to do this same thing, and ran into some problems:
1. If your remote computer is behind a lan/wan router, then you have to setup a vpn. If you setup a vpn, then you have to make sure the computer you want to control is NOT setup as the vpn server. To connect, you have to setup an vpn connection, connect to the lan/wan ip address, then use remote access and connect to the internal ip address of the remote computer. 2. Setting up the vpn wasn't the easiest thing to do. Getting the firewall and the router to allow passthrough was a pain in the @ss.

Could you use TightVNC in lieu of Windows Remote Desktop?

It really depends on how often you want to do this. I've looked at several options and as I don't do it a whole lot I use LogMeIn. www.logmein.com
It's basically a free GoToMyPC although you have to pay if you want to transfer files... Well, either that or use AIM or IM ![]() If you really want to control it through normal Remote Desktop than see 2 posts above as it sounds about right. Again, as I don't do it very frequently it wasn't worth it.

Yes you can.. The person that has the XP Home machine needs to initiate a 'Remote Assistance' request. This can be done in the Help and Support section of the Start menu. It is basically Remote Desktop with an interactive interface so that the remote user can communicate with the end-user. XP professional has the same feature.
And if the XP home machine is behind a router, you don't need to setup VPN access. You just need to map port 3389 to the IP and port 3389 of the XP Home machine. Usually routers have a fairly simple web interface to do this type of thing. Last edited by bbrian : 12-14-2004 at 04:09 PM. |
