Laptop Battery Software

A friend has a HP laptop and it has software that will automatically drain the battery completely down and recharge it and report its full health in % form. Do they have anything like this for other laptops? I know my IBM T40 has it built in.

The T40 I have does. You press the Access IBM button when its starting up and it goes into a builtin DOS mode which all kinds of utilities. The HP one is run from Windows and runs every few months depending on how its set.

What are you going to need it for? T40 is VERY powerful and I can't see needing a newer one unless you are doing heavy graphics work as the T40 has a Radeon 7500 anyway. My brother has a 1.5Ghz 1024MB Dell 700m and he can play Doom 3 on the thing. Those Pentium M cpus are a lot quicker than their Ghz make them out to be.

If the T40 can be had new and a few hundred cheaper than the T41 or T42 then I think the decision is very easy. Hell I still have my Thinkpad 600E. 366mhz and 192MB of FURY!!! It has Windows XP and I use it for GPS duty with MS Streets and Trips.

If you can do the math in a 64 Bit environment you should look into an Athlon64 system runing the 64 bit version of windows. It should crunch like there is no tomorrow.

I had been looking for similar software for dell laptops. I had some dell batteries that would need 'reconditioning' but the involved sending them back to dell. I always wondered if there was software that could force the laptop to drain and re-charge and check status for you.

I guess it would be strongly hardware dependent though....

Well the guys HP did have it, but I rebuilt the computer with a new version of XP Pro instead of using their restore disks, so now I am in the process of trying to find it for him without reverting to the restore disks.
