Ex "boyfriend' retaliated by deleting many of my programs/files on my computer. Since he works with computers, he was able to do a lot of damage. Still many problems--but my question, for now, concerns my firewall. First I tried to use Norton program reinstall (fortunately I still had the Systemworks disk since that was one of the programs he deleted) but could not get Zonealarm (free) to come back. Next went to site, downloaded Zonealarm but when I tried to reinstall Zonealarm got a message about TrueVector Services having to be disabled. Rebooted tried again, this time each tme I try to reinstall, it seems to start the process and then abort.
Need a really simple/stupid explanation of what do do. Or should I just go to a different firewall? If so, which one--prefer cheap or free.Think all I have is the general firewall that comes with XP--but not even sure of that. Please help. |

Sounds like the jerk did not fully uninstalled Zonealarm.
TrueVector is part of Zonealarm. You might try going into control panel and uninstalling Zonealarm that way first. If its not listed you might be able to go into task manager and shut it down. Merry Christmas |

tried unstallation again. May have completed that since search shows no "alarm" or zone" components. But stilll each time I try to install, get quick flash saying "shutting down Zonealarm".
Did not have a problem last year when I installed Zonealarm but see that there is a notice about having to be an "administrator" if have XP. This is a single (non-network) home computer--but could this relate to my problem. |

Considering the circumstances, it is hard to tell what else he may have damaged, or if he's trojaned, keylogged, or otherwise "bugged" your computer. I would strongly advise that you wipe the drive, reformat it and reinstall your OS and programs. If there's any sensitive information on the hard drive now, or if there will ever be in the future this will be the only way to insure any security.
This is the computer equivalent of "changing the locks" (which, if the split was not amicable, probably wouldn't be a bad idea as well).
