What's ".tar" ?

What type of file is a .tar? What program can I use to extract these types of files or how can I use them? I see a lot of video files that I want to download but they are in .tar format and I wasn't sure what that was...

StuffIt for sure. Probably winzip would work too. Use google if I didn't help

.tar is just another compressed extension. WinRAR will uncompress the file.
