YASQ... windows xp network printer sharing is acting stupid...

okay, actually, i guess it's acting smarter than me. stupid computer.

so both my and my husband's computers are dells running win xp, through a netgear router... the printer is hooked up to my computer. last time i set up a home network, he could use my printer, no problem. since i re-installed windows, i set up the network again, i can print from my computer, but when he tries to do it, it doesn't work.

from his computer, i tried the search the network for printers wizard, and it came up blank. i tried to add it a different way, and i got some "you are not allowed to acces this crap, talk to your network administrator" message. so... where do i go to fix whatever setting is wrong? i've been clicking around coming up with nothing and it's starting to piss me off.

just making sure, but did you check to see if both computers have the same workgroup name? once both computers have the same workgroup names, you should be able to see the shared files and printers on both computers. and, since you're using a router, there's no need to do any more setup.

Did you make sure to share your printer on your computer? I don't think just plain setting up a network does it. Gotta explicitly right click on the printer and hit "Share"

The built-in XP firewall might be interfering. I had to do a fresh install a few days ago and the firewall bit me in the butt. I disabled it and all was fine.

No, I'm not going to tell you how to do it because I know you know how to use "help".

Oh, that's easy. Just upgrade to one of the new dual-layer cupholders and you'll be set. They're strong enough to hold an entire bottle of midori. This is definitely a plus - you can keep the bottle right there in your computer and not have to bother refilling a glass.

I love XP network printing, especially when the rental counter is trying to print up a rental agreement, and I'm sitting at another computer printing up blank pages (while smirking) on their printer and watching them flip out because they don’t know what the hell is going on...

found the problem finally. had to remove the shared printer from teh other desktop, let the wizard search for it again, and then download the proper drivers. works. what a friggin pain. it shouldn't take me an hour to figure this stuff out!!! i ran through help troubleshooters three times, and always landed on "you've found a problem taht troubleshooter can't fix."
