when i was installing linux on P2 systems (7 years ago) mandrake worked well,
the only issues i had were video and nic drivers, i could usually get the video to work by installing random drivers that were availible at the time. installing nic drivers was another story the cards were supported or not supported. if you can get your hands on a knoppix cd you can troubleshoot alot faster. im not sure if knoppix will even support a system that old, since it installs so fast i would give it a try. |

You probably are not going to be able to install most of the recent builds of linux. However, older mandrake and redhat distributions are usually still on FTP's.
ftp://ftp.cse.buffalo.edu/pub/Linux has 7.1 which should work. |

Alpha is Apple, if I remember correctly, and SPARC is Sun. Sorry. I'd check the FTP for you, but they are at 100 active connections. If you'd like to check some others out, go to linuxiso.org. Click on your Distribution of choice, and then click on <----that. That will give you a bunch of mirrors. Since you don't want to updated versions that Linuxiso.org has, you will need to go up to almost the root of the directory. Look for a directory called 'Linux' or 'Mandrake' or 'Distr' something like that, and it should show you the older distributions.Hope that helps. |

There are distros out there made to be small and run light. One of them is Damn Small Linux. Check out their site: Damn Small Linux link
BTW, how proficient are you with Linux? I have not run DSL myself so I do not know how newbie friendly it is. If you like, you should browse through www.distrowatch.com HTH |
