Outlook Express 6 Weirdness...

I have a client running XP Home SP2, AOL 9.0, and Outlook Express 6, all currently patched. They just got broadband, so I am attempting to wean them off of AOL.

I set the client up a GMail account, and used GMail's auto-configuration script to set the account up in OE6. I double-checked the settings, and all are exactly as the GMail site says they should be. (GMail SMTP/POP access uses SSL and different ports from 25 and 110).

OE will receive messages sent to the GMail addy with no problem. Any message that is in the OE Inbox can be forwarded or replied to using the GMail account with no problem.

Here's the weirdness: If I open up OE and create a new message, when I try to send the message I get an error window that says that there aren't any email accounts configured on the computer and to check the email configuration settings... WTF?

I know the account is set up correctly because it will receive AND send (but only via forward or reply to an already-existing Inbox message).

AOL 9.0 works fine. Do I need to reinstall OE6? Anybody been here before?

I'd try removing it via add/remove windows components then do a reinstall. that honestly sounds pretty damn strange.

I've seen similar problems in OE5 and removing and re-adding the profile would fix it. You might also check the rules and make sure there aren't any bogus 'create new mail' rules.

Send a message via MSN to Jeffbx
Double check that the Gmail account is set up as the primary mail account. By default OE will send outgoing mail from the primary account only.

The GMail account is the only email account set up in OE. I have not set their AOL Mail up in OE.

Thanks for the tip, though...

Both very good tips - I'll try both of these - thanks!

I think all this does is remove access to OE (for a specific Windows User account) rather than actually uninstalling it. I am not certain, though. Thanks for the tip.
