Alright, I am pretty good with computers, but this one I can not figure out. I am trying to use the search feature built into XP. I am trying to pull up all .php files that have a variable named SCRIPT_NAME in them. I have *.php for the file name and SCRIPT_NAME for the "Word or phrase in the file." It comes up with nothing and I know its in several files....

It seems to be only pulling up where it shows up in .txt files, not .php files where are just basically text...

Can anyone help?

I really can't help, but I know that the search built into explorer sucks donkey...

Google desktop isn't much better since it just archives specific files. Your best bet is to use a IDE and use the search function in it. It would be better since it's optimized for code.

I think Netbeans is still free, open source. Try using it, creating a project, importing your files, and running a search.

I wrote something that will go through and download stuff and rename the variables, but I just thought it was dumb that this would not work.

Have you installed PHP on your computer? If not, PHP files would show up as TXT only.

I can edit the PHP files in notepad which is all I need. I just wanted to be able to search through a directory of them to see which ones had a certain variable in it.

I will pose your question to my class tonight. I tried to search for "PHP" files also, and I got the same result you did.

If you have PHP installed though, most of your PHP files should be held in htdocs.

I just found out you can not search in .xml files either. There should be a setting somewhere to turn this on.

if you use the advanced search feature you can search for files by extention,
the standard search skips alot of extentions so its faster for the average user. advanced search also works well for office products. also if it pulls up the txt files with the same name you can choose to open the folder containing the file(by right clicking on the file)
and that should put you real close or right on the money.

It's not a hidden file, is it? I tried searching for unrelated file type and I couldn't find it, but I knew they were there. I found out that I had not selected for looking in hidden files and folders.

I think if you type ciadv.msc at a Start -> Run prompt and then
right-click somewhere in the white space and pull up "Properties", you can check "Index files with unknown extensions" which might help.

But I'm not on a Windows machine right now so I can't test it until morning.

i took a bunch of microsoft classes and a hardware class. mcp and a+, had my own consulting buisness before i got hurt. now im trying to slowly build it back up again. mostly small buisness type stuff. ive been thinking about taking classes agian to get a BA in IT. im hoping to get a nice cushy management job in a few more years, thats the plan anyways.
