Comcast DNS Problems Nationwide... Again
On 4/7 and now on 4/12 (tonight), Comcast national servers are not functioning well... and in some cases not at all. Thank goodness someone on Comcast's forums posted instructions and addresses for changing to Verizon and other DNS servers. Funny... Comcast provided NO information in this regard. A total noob such as myself might be tempted to waste huge amounts of precious time searching for some malicious "ghost in the machine". All I have to say is thank goodness for educated sharing people that post to forums. Thank you people in the Comcast Forums! I learned something new and valuable tonight.

Hey, thanks for the update - I thought it was me. I was rebooting routers & firewalls & PCs all over the place last night. I thought it was a DNS problem 'cuz my mail was still coming in OK, but after I rebooted my firewall things started flowing again, so I assumed it was me.
Glad to know I'm not the only one. |

I've been using the Verizon DNS since last week. Glad I didn't bother changing back to the Comcast ones.

Yeah... just switched over to 4.2.2.2 after having slow to no loads again this evening.
Sorry, just noticed my link requires a Comcast password. Here's what's supposed to have come up... TNTaangela Here's a List of DNS Servers & How-To Instructions Apr 12, 2005 11:03 PM Posts: 2,900 From: Nashville, TN Registered: 10/1/03 Reply Report Abuse *MAC Users please see the next post* FOR WINDOWS XP, 2000, and 2003 ONLY (credit goes to CajunTek) For other options and for information for those that don't know how to change dns servers.. Here's some info on how..(excerpts from dslreports) Q: How do I change what DNS server my computer uses? (#8164) A: Note: Instructions below are for Windows 2000, XP and 2003 users only. For a complete set of instructions for multiple operating systems, including screenshots, please visit the ORSC website. Additionally, if you are behind a router, you may have to change DNS settings using the router configuration utility. Please consult your user manual. To change DNS servers: o Right click on the My Network Places icon on the desktop and select Properties. (If the icon is not available, go to Start menu | My Computer | My Network Places | View Network Connections.) o Locate the network connection that is associated with your Internet connection. This may be labeled something like "Local Area Connection." If you have more than one connection to choose from, be sure you determine the right one before proceeding. o Right click on the appropriate connection and select Properties. o In the list that appears under the General tab, double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). o In the window that appears, you want to select the option to Use the following DNS server addresses... At this point you will want to enter at least one of your personal preferred DNS servers. There are a number of public servers suggested by members of the Comcast forum; simply do a search for 'DNS' and you should get adequate results. You can also check out this list compiled by jdmatl See Profile. o Press Ok out of all windows until you are back to the Network Connections window. You can now open your web browser and browse to a website to see if it connects faster. ALWAYS USE PUBLIC SERVERS FIRST!!!! ... then as soon as the outage is resolved, flush your dns, and go back into your settings and reset it to Obtain DNS Automatically. It will get you back on your Comcast server. Windows XP caches successful AND failed DNS lookups for 24hrs by default, so you want TO FLUSH YOUR DNS - Go to Start -> Run - Type cmd ... click OK - In the box that comes up, type ipconfig /flushdns ...press Enter key Other Windows systems, simply rebooting should do the trick. If you are using a router, power cycling it will usually clear out it's cache. When Comcast gets this all cleared up, you'll probably want to empty out that field so that the best DNS can be picked dynamically. It's amazing to me how so many of us work in IT and would never be allowed to have an out of control situation like this happen in our own companies. It also amazes me that the user's offer better advice than the customer service representatives. What does that say all in all? These servers may also be reached at the single name resolver.qwest.net. There may only be two numbers, but the addresses map to a 7-server complex that is spread out across the continental US. |

I might change this if I start experiencing more problems later tonight. Also, random question, anyone know where i can find my comcast username/password? |

Do you use your Comcast mail account? Your username is your mail address (before @comcast.net) & mail PW is your Comcast PW. |

Probably will have to call them, then. I don't think they use ID/PW authentication on the modem, so e-mail would be the only other place you'd use it.

That is funny. I thought I was the only one who didn't know my comcast userid/pswd. I never use their e-mail either.I thought the problems I was having were netware router related. The funny things is that the netware routers were having dhcp issues and one of the solutions someone mentioned was to hardcode the dns info which solved the problem. |

I knew I was supposed to have a comcast mail user ID and password but whenever I call they say I don't have internet through them even though clearly I'm being billed for it. I've also heard it's not available in my area but I pass the **** building everyday to work which is less than 5 miles away.
